Circus Krone - The Company - Stedelijk Museum Zwolle

Stedelijk Museum in Zwolle
The circus was in the city. Though, the circus left its impressions in the form of a photo
exhibition by the Zwolle photographer Jan Drost. His photos of Europe's largest European
circus were exhibited from 4.September to 3.October 2004 in the Stedelijk Museum Zwolle.

"It was the third exhibition with photos from
Circus Krone", he reveals with a wink,
"and it will not be the last."
For more than 30 years Jan Drost has worked
as a circus photographer. However, his love
for the circus is substantially older. He has
been a lover of the circus since he was a child.
He was a pupil in school 4 at the Turfmarkt, the
place where the town market is located and
Krone raised its tent in Zwolle.
To this very day, he has retained this fascination
for the circus. "It is a combination of sights and
smells. The smell of saw dust, popcorn and
animals, the visual effects of the spotlight in
the tent and manege."
Just entering the tent of Circus Krone is
something special. There's no comparison
of watching a circus in person with watching
the circus on television!

Jan Drost is a dedicated friend of the circus, yet it does not experience the fascination
with many circuses. It must be quality, says it. I speak of a circus with the big K as in
kwaliteit and that Krone begins with a K is for him no coincidence.
Krone is certainly one of the best circuses in world today.
Top quality - unfortunately there's little of it elsewhere today.

Drost does not come only as a spectator to the Circus Krone He combines his visit with his
passion as a photographer. The photos are in international circus magazines, in the Dutch
circus newspaper "De Piste", in the Krone calendar or as Krone press photos.

Twice a year, he visits the Krone Bau in Munich. Mostly during a program change, when
he can visit two different Krone presentations. His journeys to the world of Circus Krone
has lead him throughout Europe.
His stated goal is to arouse motions with his photos. His life long fascination with the
circus is projected through his award winning photos.

Nine years ago, the Stedelijk Museum Zwolle hosted the Krone model. The
miniature Krone "tent city" is now situated in a honored place in the Circus
Krone Building. It is now referred as the "Circus Krone in miniature".
